Kenya - Tom Naumann: Full Day at St. David’s School

Pastor Tom Naumann here from Team Kenya.

Today we were blessed with another busy day of teaching; this time at St. David’s School in Etago. Contrary to what you might assume, St. David’s is not named after the biblical king, but rather retired CLC
missionary David Koenig! The church was founded in 2000 and the school started shortly after. Pastor Enosh has been serving as pastor of the church and director of the school since 2008. He is also the president of the KCLC and works as a director of the local tea factory in the neighboring town of Kisii (black tea is consistently Kenya’s number one export; a heritage from Kenya’s former days as a British colony). Pastor Enosh is a busy guy!

We arrived at the school in the morning and were greeted with many smiles and welcome songs from the children. It is hard to describe the feelings of humility and happiness that come from such a joyful reception. All the students and staff gathered in the onsite church sanctuary where us Mission Helpers delivered our evangelism program teaching stories of Jesus as true God, true Man, the Savior, and for Everyone. The children were attentive and engaging.

Following the program it was time for lunch: Beef, boiled potatoes, chapati, and tea. Incredible! We are treated as honored guests everywhere we go. The food is simple but delicious.

After lunch, Lauren and Abby played games and sang songs with the children for a few hours. Elijah was asked to try his hand at teaching an English class, which he did admirably! I was asked to teach a Bible lesson to the oldest class, grade 6 (St. David’s is K-6). After first attempting to give a lesson on God’s teachings of Law and Gospel, I scraped that and decided to teach a simple lesson on Salvation in Jesus Christ. See the blackboard in the picture below for the outline :) The 6th graders have a decent grasp of English so we did not require a translator. They were able to take notes and copy everything I wrote on the board. The hour long class went by in a flash. It was a joy to share the simple gospel of Jesus with these dear children of God. It is a memory I will cherish forever.

Tomorrow we had planned to spend another day at St. David’s, but we have fresh news that there are new tea ching opportunities at our next stop in Moi’s Bridge/Kitale region. Specifically, Pastor Calvin in Kitale has met two groups of non Lutherans who are interested in learning more about the biblical doctrines of Lutheranism. It seems clear that God is opening a door for His Word and we are eager to go through it. After consulting with our local pastors and leaders here, we decided that our team will go a day early. Please pray for our safe travel tomorrow and pray that His Word take root and bear fruit!

Thank you for your continued support and prayers!

In Christ Alone,
Pastor Tom Naumann
